I was pleased to find, while trawling the Internet this morning, that the idea of simulating depth by animating old stereograph cards—which I explored here last April—has gone big with a new website at the New York Public Library (the site’s creator, Joshua Heineman, seems to have independently discovered the effect while flipping through closely-timed photographs of his own). It’s a fascinating site, drawing from the NYPL’s archives rather than the Library of Congress’s, and allows anyone to create these striking artifacts which remind us that the past is, in literal fact, multi-dimensional.
