I realized from my last highly educational segment that I may have given the false impression that the Brothers Olmsted were not engaged in the warmest of relationships. Not wishing to lead my gentle viewers off the high road of Historical Truth, I want to correct that perception, which was inserted merely for what we may term ‘narrative vigor’. In reality, while John Olmsted was somewhat suspicious of his elder brother’s inability to Get A Goddamn Job Already, the two were extremely close. Indeed, when John died in 1857, their father wrote to Fred: “I have lost not only a son but a very dear friend. You almost your only friend.”¹ A bit of a bummer to get hit with the realization that your dad thinks you’re a socially-inept loner while you both mourn your brother’s death, but in most other cases Olmsted père was a pretty nice guy.
